On December 3, 2015, Friends of TJ Park sent a joint letter to the County Board and School Board identifying concerns about the impact on Thomas Jefferson Park. One of the requests included representation on the Public Facilities Review Committee (PFRC) and the Building Level Planning Committee for this project. Friends of TJ Park has an appointee on the PFRC, Juliet Hiznay. Updates will be provided both on this website and through the Friends of TJ Park email list. This project offers the potential to add significant recreation assets on the west side of the park that could be used by the community outside of school hours. Use of structured parking will permit a recreation space on top of the garage and current designs also offer opportunities to enhance the entrances and recreation space available to Jefferson Middle School. Due to the usage demands at Thomas Jefferson Park, Friends of TJ Park continues to be concerned that community access to the park and recreation assets will be restricted when these new intensive uses are added to the site and that design could have some negative impacts on existing programs. Friends of TJ Park will continue to work on ensuring that this project enhances the park while minimizing any negative impact.
On December 3, 2015, the Arlington School Board selected Thomas Jefferson Park as the next site to build an elementary school. The County Board is voted in favor of the proposal on December 15, 2015 again after declining to approve the location on January 27, 2015 based upon community concerns. The planning and design documents reflected changes to the design that site the school in the northwest corner of the county owned parcel. Although this area is currently used for parking and outdoor recreation, it is impervious surface. The County Board also placed a number of limits on the design and impact of new school construction at the site during its January 27, 2015 meeting, which are reflected in the minutes.
A key takeaway of the Community Facilities Study is that the county does not have enough indoor and outdoor park and recreation facilities to meet current or future needs. That is why we need to get energized now and talk about how best to accomplish out mission: to keep Thomas Jefferson Park green and accessible for the benefit of all users.

NOVEMBER 12, 2014, Arlington Heights Civic Association voted unanimously to support a comprehensive planning approach that the community believes will not be possible if the county supports the proposal to build a school by 2018 is approved. That language is as follows:
“BE IT RESOLVED: Arlington Heights Civic Association strongly supports a comprehensive planning approach to the Thomas Jefferson site. Arlington Heights Civic Association is deeply concerned that building a new elementary school by 2018 on the Thomas Jefferson site would foreclose future improvements of the site.”
